As I mentioned in my previous post, I’m experimenting with video, hoping to share more of the things I’m learning here in Izmir.
Homer has been a particular obsession for me since moving to Izmir. I have taught The Iliad and The Odyssey many times over my 27 years of teaching, and I’m lucky enough to live in the city where he lived. This gives me a focus for my explorations and — as I explored in a series of tales I wrote last autumn — also provide inspiration for how I might live my life and pursue my dreams here.
Now that this “epic” video of 11 minutes is done, I plan to break it into parts and create Reels for them on my teaching Instagram page, @teaching_homeros. Ultimately, I hope Instagram and Substack can become platforms from which the teaching of Homer — his times as well as his works — takes off.
This Substack won’t suddenly become a video site. I have plenty of observations on Turkish culture and a new series of tales almost ready to share.
As they say… stay tuned!
